North Cobbs Season Ends In Sweet 16

Last Updated: October 23, 2016 12:42 PM

The North Cobb Lady Warriors 2016 Fall season came to an end on Wednesday at Parkview HS in the Sweet 16 round of the GHSA State Fastpitch playoffs. North Cobb, in the 2nd round for the first time since 2011, lost both ends of the double-header to Parkview. The Lady Warriors say goodbye to 8 senior players and 1 senior manager.

In Game 1, North Cobb as the visiting team struggled to find any offense against the Parkview starting pitcher getting just 5 hits in the game. Parkview started fast on defense with a quick 1-2-3 inning and then put 5 runs on the board in the bottom half of the 1st on 4 hits highlighted by a 3 run triple. North Cobb tried to chip away scoring a run on back to back hits by
Angela Cecere
&
Hannah Bednarek
, with Bednarek driving in
Kennedy Kirklin
who was running for starting pitcher
Julie Sanderlin
. Parkview added 2 more runs on a couple of North Cobb errors in the 2nd to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Sanderlin settled down & held Parkview in check the rest of the game, giving up just 1 more run in the 4th inning. North Cobb just couldn't generate any offense and Parkview took game 1 by an 8-1 score.
Mikila Mullen
was 1-2 in the game before leaving the game due to injury. Bednarek was 2-3 with an RBI and a double.
Kathryn Bywaters
went 1-2 with a hit-by-pitch. Sanderlin went the distance giving up 5 earned runs on 9 hits.

In game 2 North Cobb looked to bounce back and tie the series but Parkview jumped ahead early once again, scoring 4 runs, 2 earned, in the top of the first off starter
Samantha Simcox
.
Jasmine Copeland
launched a solo homerun in the bottom of the 1st deep over the LF fence to make it 4-1 after 1. Parkview added another unearned run in the 2nd inning to make it 5-1. North Cobb tried to draw closer in their half of the 2nd inning loading the bases with 2 outs but a hard grounder was fielded by the first basement to end the threat. Parkview added another run in the 3rd to stretch the lead to 6-1 when some controversy began. Cecere led off with a line drive single to left field and Copeland put another ball deep over the left field fence but with Bywaters in the box, Parkview appealed and Copeland was called out for missing home plate. Copeland was credited with an RBI triple but this very disputed call changed the outlook of the inning and put a damper on a possible Lady Warrior comeback. More sloppy defense by North Cobb gave Parkview 2 more unearned runs in the 4th inning to push their lead to 8-2. Parkview added single runs in the 5th and 6th innings to make the score 10-2. North Cobb only had 2 batters reach base over the last 3 innings and the game ended in a run-rule in Parkview's favor. Simcox went the distance allowing just 4 earned runs on 14 hits. Copeland was 2-3 with 2 RBI. Cecere was 1-3 with a run scored. Sanderlin and
Cassidy Babcock
had the other 2 North Cobb hits.

This ended the North Cobb Lady Warrior season. While the final record stood at 14-20, the team went farther than any Lady Warrior team since the 2011 Elite 8 run team. #GoWarriors

North Cobb Sweeps Colquitt To Move To Rd 2 Of State Playoffs!!!

Last Updated: October 13, 2016 5:06 PM

The North Cobb Lady Warriors traveled to Colquitt Co HS on Wednesday for the first round of the 2016 GHSA State Fastpitch playoffs and came home with 2 come from behind victories to move on to round 2!!! In a true team effort, the lineup came alive and put up some impressive numbers, scoring 26 runs on 30 hits over the two games. North Cobb overcame early deficits in both games pulling ahead late and holding on for the sweep. North Cobb will now travel to Parkview for round 2.

In game 1, host Colquitt Co jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning and then added 2 more in the 2nd inning to make it 5-0 early in the game.
Samantha Simcox
came in in the 2nd inning to stop any further damage. North Cobb responded though, as they would all night long, with 3 runs in the top of the 3rd inning on a 3-run homerun by
Jasmine Copeland
. Colquitt answered back with 3 more runs in the 4th inning to stretch their lead back to 8-3. The Lady Warriors responded in big fashion in the 5th scoring 5 runs to tie the game at 8.
Julie Sanderlin
led off the inning with a walk and
Rayna Ezzell
followed with a line drive single to RF. With 1 out,
Hannah Bednarek
hit a deep flyball to LF to score 1, then
Cassidy Babcock
singled to CF for an RBI to make it 8-5.
Mikila Mullen
singled to RF for an RBI and after a 2nd intentional walk to Copeland,
Kathryn Bywaters
lined a single into LF for 2 RBIs to tie the game! The score stayed at 8 through regulation sending the teams into ITB action. North Cobb failed to scored in the 8th after a questionable umpire call of the runner leaving 2B early, but Babcock threw out the Colquitt ITB runner trying to advance to third and Simcox got out of the inning without giving up a run. In the 9th inning, North Cobb exploded for 7 runs to take full control of the game. 4 singles to start the inning, including RBIs by Copeland and Bywaters, and a huge 3 run double by Bednarek put the Lady Warriors ahead for good. Colquitt added 2 runs in their half of the 9th but that was all they could muster. North Cobb had 18 hits in the game and Simcox gave up just 2 earned runs in 7 2/3 innings of work for the win.

In game 2, host Colquitt Co was the visiting team and yet again jumped out to an early lead. After starter Simcox got 2 quick outs, Colquitt used a walk, a double, and a single to take a 2-0 lead. But North Cobb wouldn't let that lead last long as the Lady Warriors responded immediately in the bottom half of the first with
Iman Muhammed
leading off with a walk and Mullen reaching on a sacrifice bunt that resulted in an error, and Copeland with a sacrifice bunt put runners on 2nd & 3rd with just 1 out. Bywaters then hit a ball that the SS couldn't handle that plated both runners. North Cobb eventually loaded the bases with a single by Ezzell and a hit by pitch from
Angela Cecere
but Colquitt's pitcher got a pop-out to end the threat. Colquitt went ahead yet again 5-2 with a solo HR and poor defense by the Lady Warriors. But North Cobb just wouldn't stay down. Bywaters singled and then scored on a double down the 3rd base line by Cecere who scored on a hard single by Bednarek making it a 5-4 game. In the 4th North Cobb strung together 3 straight 2-out hits to tie the game at 5 but that was short lived as Colquitt got a lead-off triple and a sacrifice fly to go up 6-5. North Cobb yet again came right back in the bottom of the 5th with a single by Cecere, a walk to Bednarek, an RBI fielder's choices by Muhammed and Mullen, then a bases clearing double by Copeland, giving her 7 RBIs on the day. With North Cobb up now 11-6, Colquitt mounted one last rally in the 7th inning. Simcox got a lead-off pop-up to SS but the next 2 batters got on with a single and a double. This brought game 1 starter Sanderlin back into the game to try to pick up the save. After an error and a single made it an 11-7 game, Sanderlin struck out the next batter for the 2nd out and induced a ground ball to Mullen at 3rd base which she took herself and tagged 3rd base for the final out of the game. Simcox picked up the win in game 2 and Sanderlin got the save.

North Cobb hopes to carry the excitement of this 2 game sweep into next week's round 2 series at Parkview! #GoWarriors

North Cobb Takes 3rd Place In Region Tournament

Last Updated: October 06, 2016 8:32 AM

The North Cobb Lady Warriors went 3-2 in the 2016 Region 3-7A tournament to take 3rd place!! Coming into the tournament as the 4 seed, North Cobb defeated McEachern, Marietta, and North Paulding to secure the 3 seed heading into the 1st round of the GHSA state tournament next week. The Lady Warriors will match-up against the #2 seed out of region 1-7A which has yet to be determined.

Wednesday night North Cobb & North Paulding faced off in a losers bracket game, for the 2nd straight year, to determine who stayed alive and who got the 4 seed out of region 3-7A. It was a back and forth affair, with North Cobb battling back from 2 separate 3 run deficits to pull ahead late and hold on for the victory! North Paulding got ahead early with single runs in the first 3 innings for an early 3-0 lead. But after being held hitless for the first 3 innings, the Lady Warrior bats woke up in the 4th plating 3 runs on 4 hits & a couple of North Paulding errors.
Jasmine Copeland
led off the inning with a triple to LF & that was followed by a double off the bat of
Kathryn Bywaters
. Bywaters scored on one of the 2 errors.
Rayna Ezzell
added an RBI ground out to tie the game at 3. North Paulding quickly responded though with 3 runs in the top of the 5th with 3 straight hits to lead off the inning and a costly North Cobb error.
Samantha Simcox
came in to relieve starter
Julie Sanderlin
and stopped the rally there with North Paulding leading 6-3. But the Lady Warriors responded with 5 runs off 4 hits and a walk.
Iman Muhammed
led off the inning with a line drive single over SS.
Mikila Mullen
walked, Copeland followed with a single to LF to load the bases. Bywaters singled on a flare to CF driving in Muhammed, Sanderlin followed that with a big double to CF driving in 2 runs! Ezzell drove in a run with another RBI ground out and
Angela Cecere
got an RBI sacrifice bunt to put North Cobb ahead 8-6. North Cobb added a run in the 6th on a double by Mullen who later scored on a North Paulding error to make it 9-6. Simcox closed the door in the 7th with
Cassidy Babcock
catching a popup behind the plate for the final out. Simcox allowed no hits and just 1 baserunner over 3 innings of work, striking out 1. Bywaters finished the game 3-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Copeland was 2-4 with 2 runs scored.

The win moved North Cobb on in the bracket to face Kennesaw Mountain, who had lost in ITB earlier in the day to Hillgrove. Kennesaw Mountain quickly stopped any early momentum for North Cobb by scoring 2 quick unearned runs in the top of the 1st inning. The Lady Mustangs added another run in the 2nd inning off a homerun to LF to make it 3-0. Starting pitcher Sanderlin settled in after that though and held the Lady Mustangs in check until Kennesaw Mtn added an additional run in the 5th. North Cobb finally made some noise at the plate in the bottom of the 6th. A lead-off triple from Muhammed got things started and Copeland followed with a double to RF to drive her in. Bywaters then singled to CF driving in Copeland to make it a 4-2 game with just 1 out, but a couple of infield ground outs ended the rally. In the 7th, Kennesaw Mtn added 2 more runs to their lead with 3 straight 1-out hits. Simcox came in to get the final 2 outs in relief of Sanderlin keeping the score at 6-2. The Lady Warriors went down in order in the 7th though to end the game.

North Cobb now waits until the results of the region 1-7A playoffs are in to determine who & where they play. 3 teams remain alive as of Thursday morning. Lowndes is undefeated and in the finals already. Colquitt Co & Camden Co face off to determine who goes on to the finals. North Cobb will travel to the #2 seed from that region. Round 1 of the GHSA state playoffs begins on Wednesday afternoon at the 1-7A #2 seed with a double-header. The "if" game would be on Thursday afternoon again at the host #2 seed from region 1-7A.

North Cobb Qualifies For State Playoffs

Last Updated: October 05, 2016 8:06 AM

The North Cobb Lady Warriors qualified for the GHSA AAAAAAA state playoff by virtue of their 13-0 victory over Marietta on Tuesday evening. Earlier in the evening, the Lady Warriors missed out on clinching their spot in state when they fell behind early to Kennesaw Mtn and eventually lost 9-1. By defeating Marietta in the nightcap game, North Cobb stayed alive in the region tournament & faces North Paulding at 6pm on Wednesday at Kennesaw Mtn.

In the early game, North Cobb faced off with #1 seeded Kennesaw Mtn in a winners bracket match-up. With a berth into state on the line, the two teams were scoreless after 2 innings. That's when Kennesaw Mtn strung together 3 straight hits, including 2 doubles, a sacrifice fly and a North Cobb error to jump ahead 3-0. North Cobb was unable to answer back in the top of the 4th and then Kennesaw Mtn pulled even farther ahead with 5 runs, only 2 earned, in the bottom half of the 4th. With 2 on and 2 out, the Lady Mustangs got a 2-RBI single and then 2 North Cobb errors to make it 8-0. North Cobb stayed in the game though in the top of the 6th as
Angela Cecere
led off with a single to RF and a 2-out hit from
Iman Muhammed
scored Cecere to make it 8-1. But in the bottom of the 6th, Kennesaw Mtn got a 1-out triple that was followed by a run-scoring sacrifice bunt to end the game 9-1. Starting pitcher
Julie Sanderlin
gave up just 6 hits in 4 2/3 innings work and
Samantha Simcox
finished the game in the circle giving up just 1 hit. Muhammed was 2-3 in the game including a double to CF in the 3rd inning.
Kathryn Bywaters
and Cecere had the only other hits for North Cobb.

In the 2nd game of the evening, with a berth into the GHSA State playoffs on the line, North Cobb scored 5 runs in the first inning against Marietta and cruised to a 13-0 4-inning victory. Sanderlin started in the circle for North Cobb and struck out 3 in the first inning. Simcox pitched 2 innings of relief strking out 4.
Tessah McAllister
pitched an inning of relief as well and faced the minimum 3 batters. The 3 pitchers combined for a no-hitter allowing just 4 Marietta baserunners. North Cobb batters had just 3 hits but walked 10 times and forced 4 Marietta errors. Every North Cobb roster player got into the game.
Jasmine Copeland
had a 2-RBI double in the first inning.
Hannah Bednarek
and
Kendra Roach
had the other 2 hits for North Cobb.
